Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum

Solomon R. Guggenheim started collecting non-representational art from Europe early on. The German artist Hilla von Rebay helped him build up a significant collection of abstract art. Guggenheim wanted to build a museum in New York for this collection. Today the Guggenheim is one of the first addresses worldwide for modern and avant-garde art of the 20th century. The collection was expanded to include surrealism, impressionism and expressionism through further donations and purchases. The Guggenheim Museum also organizes special exhibitions and, together with the MoMA, is one of the most important exhibition halls for modern and contemporary art. Frank Lloyd Wright's unique building alone is worth a visit. For more about the building check out > Architecture New York

The most well-known artists in the Guggenheim include: Wassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall, Joan Miro, Alexander Calder, Max Beckmann, Oskar Kokoschka, Lyonel Feininger, Pablo Picasso and many other great artists.
