The Waterhouse at South Bund is an exceptional design hotel. The Waterhouse is a former warehouse on Huangpu, which has been preserved as an industrial monument and has been converted and extended. Old and new form a contrast that makes the building unique. The rooms are special, you can see through a glass slit down to the restaurant and vice versa. The Waterhouse is a very interesting boutique hotel for hipsters, designers and architects.

Location: The Waterhouse is located about 2.5 kilometers south of the Bund. The nearest subway station is Xiaonanmen, about 1 kilometer to the west.

Grand Hyatt Hotel Shanghai is located in the 420-meter-high Jin Mao Tower in Pudong district. The 5 star hotel with 555 rooms starts on the 53 floor and extends over 38 floors to the 87th floor. On the 88th floor is the observation deck of the Jin Mao Tower, from which you can look into the hotel lobby (photo). The Grand Hyatt is a spectacular hotel that has been photographed by the german artist Andreas Gursky. If you like living in a high-rise, with a gigantic view on the city, you can also head to the Park Hyatt in the neighboring building called Shanghai World Financial Center.

Location: This hotel is located in Pudong, next to the tallest building in town, the Shanghai Tower. The nearest underground station is about 500 meters away.

The Fairmont Peace Hotel was built in 1929 as Sassoon House. Here was the legendary Cathay Hotel built by Victor Sassoon. The hotel is in the front line of the Bund and breathes the air of colonial history. It originated in the time when Shanghai stood for infinite luxury, prostitution and opium caves. When the Communists took over China, the hotel was turned into an office. In 1956 the building was reused as a hotel, the name Peace Hotel was born. Since 2010 it is called Fairmont Peace Hotel, but belongs to the state-owned Jinjiang International Hotel Group. The Peace Hotel is a luxury hotel, who can not afford a room, can also visit the restaurants and bars.

Location: Directly on the Bund and the shopping street Nanjing Lu. The best location in Shanghai.

If you want to live right in the center of Shanghai, you can check in at the East Asia Hotel. The hotel of Jin Jiang Group (photo on the left) is located directly on Nanjing Lu. The hotel has rooms to the shopping street but also quiet rooms to other directions. The hotel is old but cheap. If you do not have high expectations and whish to stay at a central location, this is the one.

Location: The hotel is located on Nanjing Lu shopping street, between Century Square and Renmin Park.
