Passing by the Pitti Palace leads to the Baroque garden with statues, fountains and an orangery. Situated on a hillside above Florence the "Boboli Gardens" were built between 1549-1775. Main attractions of the famous garden are the "Fountain of Neptune" and the "Grotto".
The "Giardino dei Semplici" is part of the Natural History Museum of Florence and is located in the Botanical Garden "Orto Botanico" of the University of Forence. Its origins as a garden of medicinal plants, dates back to 1545.
The Arno is the longest river in Tuscany. With a length of around 240 km the river flows throu Florence and Pisa before flowing into the Tyrrhenian Sea at Marina di Pisa. During snow melt in spring, the Arno can swell to a torrent.
The Forte di Belvedere was built in 1595 as fortress of Ferdinand I. The Medici also had a villa built here to protect themselves from danger. The green hill above the Arno offers the best view on Florence, but is not always accessible.
There are many Medici villas around Florence and the surrounding mountains. The villas are usually surrounded by a magnificent baroque garden. In the suburb of Castello, there are the villas "Pietraia" and "Castello". In Settignano you will find the "Villa Gamberaia" and in Pratolino there is the "Villa Demidoff".
