Capri town

The small town of Capri is located high above the port of Marina Grande, from where buses and the Funicolare drive to Capri city. From the Piazzetta in Capri town you have a great view of the harbor and the west of the island. The Piazzetta is the center of the place around the square you will find many restaurants and the main church Chiesa di Santo Stefano. Capri City is a small village that has been transformed from jet-set tourism into a luxury shopping paradise that differs from the Goethestrasse in Frankfurt only by a different backdrop and better weather. The jet set has long since moved to other places that are not overrun by hordes of tourists. In addition to the luxury shops, there are luxury hotels and luxury restaurants.

Blue Grotto

The "Blue Grotto" Grotta Azzurra is the main attraction of Capri. With small rowing boats you get into the cave, where the light is reflected through a large opening under water into the grotto, creating a magical blue glow. The entrance to the cave is very small, you have to lie down when going in and out of the boat, so you do not bump your head. In strong waves, it is too dangerous, then the "Blue Grotto" is closed. The "Blue Grotto" is about 50x30 m wide, the water in the cave is about 15 m deep. If you want to escape the tourist crowds, you can swim into the grotto after 5 pm. (At your own risk, swimmers have already died trying). The "Blue Grotto" is definitely an experience. In the high season you should expect long waiting times.

Prices: The entry costs 4 € * and the rowboat 8.50 *.

Opening hours: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm *

Grotta Verde

The "Grotta Verde" is very flat, no boats go through here. The "Grotta Verde" is more like a tunnel in which the water from several directions meets and produces foaming waves. The name "Green Grotto" comes from the green light you see when you look through the cave. At the other end, the water appears green. What looks like in certain lighting conditions. For us the grotto looked rather blue. Maybe you are more lucky.

Villa Malaparte

The Italian writer Curzio Malaparte (Kurt Erich Suckert) built the Villa Malaparte in 1942 according to his own design at Capo Massullo. Actually, it was not allowed to build here but Malaparte had very good relations in politics and was able to build his villa at this wonderful place. Malaparte fought against Germany during the First World War in France, and later worked as a war correspondent for Italy during the Second World War. "Malaparte" means: The bad part in contrast to Bonaparte The good part (Napoleon). Malaparte was politically very active, but often changed sides. First he supported the fascists and took part in the march on Rome, later he joined the communists. Today, the "Villa Malaparte" is an architectural icon and one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. The orange structure became world famous by the movie "The Contempt" (Le Mépris) by Jean-Luc Godard starring Brigitte Bardot. The special feature of the "Villa Malaparte" is the roof terrace without railing, with a white curved screen and a large outside staircase.

The Swedish doctor and writer Axel Munthe bought the property, including the chapel and remains of an ancient villa of Emperor Tiberius. The bright white Villa Munthe and the chapel are connected by a flower garden, which also borders on the "Sphinx Terrace". Axel Munthe was born in 1857 and died in 1949 in Stockholm. The "Villa Michele" is one of the top attractions of Capri and therefore somtimes crowded.
