MAXXI

The Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI Secolo by the architect Zaha Hadid is located just outside in the Flaminio district. The futuristic building houses two exhibitions, the MAXXI Art and the MAXXI Architecture. The MAXXI Art presents contemporary art. The MAXXI Architecture shows topics from the fields of architecture, design and urban development. The museum of the 21st century offers a contrast to the ancient metropolis in the center of Rome.

How to get there

The tram takes you very close to the museum. From Piazza del Popolo (Flaminio underground station) take tram line 2 towards Mancini exit at Apollodoro station. From here it is a 250 m walk to the museum entrance. For current exhibitions, opening times and admission prices check the link below.

Vatican Museums

The Vatican Museums offer an incredible wealth of masterpieces. The museum emerged from the art collection of the Popes, who had collected ancient statues early on. The highlight of the visit is the Sistine Chapel with the ceiling painting by Michelangelo. The Vatican Museums have rooms that are connected by endless corridors. Also worth seeing is the spiral staircase by Guiseppe Momo, which was built in 1932 based on the model of the Bramante staircase. The Bramante staircase is also in the Vatican, but cannot be accessed without a guide. On this special staircase, with two ramps running in opposite directions, the ascending and descending persons do not meet.

National Gallery of Modern Art

The Galleria Nazionale d 'Arte Moderna is located on the northern edge of the Villa Borghese park. The focus of the collection is on works that were created between 1800 and 1950. The Museum of Classical Roman Art displays sculptures, frescoes, paintings, handicrafts, jewelery and mosaics from the Roman Empire. The neo-renaissance palace houses the most valuable pieces found during excavations in Rome.

Museo dell' Ara Pacis

In the Museo dell' Ara Pacis you can see the peace altar of Emperor Augustus. The altar made of white marble, with very beautiful reliefs was excavated in 1938.

The Museo Nazionale Etrusco shows the treasures of the Etruscans, a high civilization that lived around 800-90 BC between Rome and Bologna. Interesting sculptures and arts and crafts from pre-Roman times are displayed at the beautiful Villa Giulia.
