Rijksmuseum
The Rijksmuseum is the most famous museum in the Netherlands, here you can find all great Dutch painters such as Rembrandt, Jan Steen, Vermeer and many more. The best-known picture in the museum is "The Night Watch" by Rembrandt van Rijn. The Rijksmuseum also exhibits weapons, models of ships, fashion, jewelry and handicrafts. The Rijksmuseum is a gigantic building that breaks all architectural standards. The building was opened in 1885 and stands on one side on the Grachtenring and to the southwest on Museumsplein, a park with other museums. The architect Pierre Cuypers designed the monumental museum in the style of the Dutch Renaissance.
Scheepvaart Museum
The "Maritime Museum of Amsterdam" has a very special attraction, the ship "Amsterdam". The merchant ship of the VOC sank in 1749 at the coast of England. It was rebuilt in 1985. Since then, it is one of the top attractions of Amsterdam. It is right next to the "Het Scheepvaart Museum" in the harbor basin.
Van Gogh Museum
The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam has the largest collection of the painter in the world. When Vincent van Gogh died in 1890, his brother had collected over 200 works by the then unknown artist. The museum displays many great works by Vincent van Gogh such as the famous "Sunflowers". The museum was founded in 1962 and in 1973 the museum building byarchitect Gerrit Rietveld opened. The extension building (photo) by Kisho Kurokawa opened in 1999.
Stedelijk Museum
Besides contemporary art, the Stedelijk Museum also displays crafts, design, photography and furniture. To see you get works of Rietveld, Calder, Aalto, Breuer, Chagall, mugs, Gursky and many other big names from Art & Design.
Amsterdam Museum
If you want to understand the history of Amsterdam, this museum is the place were you will get all the information you want. The building was erected as a monastery and became an orphanage in 1578. In 1975 the "Amsterdam Museum" moved into the historical building.
Anne Frank Museum
Anne Frank had to leave her hometown of Frankfurt because of the persecution of Jews by the Nazi regime in Germany. Her family fled to Amsterdam in 1933. In 1940 Germany conqured the Netherlands and her family had to hide in this house, where Anne Frank wrote her famous diary. Anne Frank died in the concentration camp of "Bergen-Belsen" in 1945. Her father survived the war and returned to Amsterdam, where he got her diary.
Joods Historisch Museum
In the rooms of the former synagogue, the culture and history of the Jews in the Netherlands are presented. The "Jewish Museum" of Amsterdam has an impressive collection of cultural objects, paintings and historical documents.
Hermitage Amsterdam
In 2009, the former retirement home was converted into an offshoot of the "Hermitage" in Saint Petersburg. The Russian President Medvedev came to Amsterdam, to celebrate the opening ceremonies.
NEMO
The NEMO is a museum of science and technology. The concept is entirely aimed at children, the small ones can explore and try out at lot. The focus is on fun.
EYE Filminstituut NL
The film museum "EYE Filminstituut", which opened in 2012, is located at the Ij Hafen opposite the main train station, from where you can take the ferry to the other bank of the river. The Amsterdam Film Museum stands right on the water and shimmers like a white shell on the beach. A visit is worthwhile because of the beautiful view of the river and the city behind. The EYE Film Institute collects Dutch films, film posters and technical equipment. However, the film museum also shows international video art. Interesting films are shown in the 4 cinemas of the museum, not only from the Netherlands. It is worth taking a look at the program. The large restaurant has a picture window facing the river, and in good weather you can sit on the terrace.
