Rio Tejo

With over 1,000 km the Tagus is the longest river of the Iberian Peninsula. Before it flows into the Atlantic Ocean, it forms a large bay at Lisbon. The natural harbour and the connection on the river to Spain, allowed the rise of Lisbon as an important port and trading town.

Praia de Carcavelos

At the mouth of the Rio Tejo at the Atlantic Ocean, there is the fortress Forte de São Julião da Barra. Just north of the fortress, is the beach "Praia de Carcavelos". The wide sandy beach is ideal for romantic sunsets. It is also the largest beach near Lisbon. You can take the train to the station "Carcavelos" and then walk about 700 m to the beach. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants.
