The former hospital was converted into the National Museum in 1992 and also houses a large library. The famous painting Guernica by Pablo Picasso is the highlight of the exhibition. The extension of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia by French architect Jean Nouvel is also worth seeing. You can find a photo of the extension in the Architecture Madrid section. The Prado is the largest museum in Madrid and the most famous of its kind in all of Spain. The Prado is one of the best museums for painting in the world. Here you can find the great masters such as Goya, Velazquez, Tizian, Dürer, Bosch or Botticelli. You should plan at least 2 hours for the visit.

In the former power station, a museum and auditorium was built by the "Caxia" Bank in 2008. The "Caxia Forum" offers various events of art and music. There is a café and a bookshop in the lobby. For more information about the building check out "Architecture Madrid".

The museum displays the art treasures that german steel baron Heinrich Thyssen has collected. In addition to works by Dürer, Holbein and Kirchner, there are also paintings by Cézanne, van Gogh, Rubens and Canaletto.

In the Palacio de las Artes y la Industria built in 1887, there is the Museo Nacional de ciencias Naturales, with famous fossils. The Natural Science Museum of Madrid is also a renowned research institute with scientists in the fields of biology, geology and ecology. The interesting temporary exhibitions are often supplemented with works of art.

The Spanish conquerors brought America's treasures across the Atlantic to Europe. The Museo de America has the finest collection of Maya and Inca art treasures in Europe. Unfortunately, the golden objects from Mexico and Peru have often been melted down in South America in order to transport them to Spain as handy bars. Most of the approximately 25,000 objects in the collection were made from other materials. The permanent exhibition also shows some masks made of gold.
