Mirador Es Colomer

The "Mirador Es Colomer" offers a magnificent view on the cliffs in the north of Majorca. From Port de Pollenca the road winds upwards. Near the "Mirador Es Colomer" there is a car park from which you will walk for about 300 meters along the steep cliffs until you reach the 232 m high vantage point. There is a platform from where you can see the rock "El Colomer". "El Colomer" is the small rock in the water in the center of the picture. The way is broad enough, but if you have fear of heights you shall better not look down. The rocks arel very steep. The road continues for about 10 km to "Cap de Formentor". On the way there are spectacular viewpoints. The "Mirador Es Colomer" is the most beautiful on the Formentor Peninsula. The "Cap de Formentor" is the northern foothills of the Sierra Tramuntana and the northernmost point of Majorca.

Sóller

The pretty town of Sóller is located in a valley of the Sierra de Tramuntana. There has been a rail link to Palma de Mallorca since 1912, which was built to transport oranges from Soller to the island's capital. Today tourists can take the historic train to Soller. Also worth seeing is the historic Soller tram, that goes to Port de Sóller. Soller is a very well-kept small town with beautiful old houses, a market square and a large church (photo). Soller is suitable as a day trip from Palma to the slightly cooler mountains of the Tramuntana. The distance to Palma is only around 25 km.

Alcúdia

Alcúdia is the oldest city on Majorca. Finds from the megalithic period prove that the area was settled before the Phoenicians. In the year 123 ago. BC, the Romans went ashore at this place to defeat the Majorcan pirates. Finally, the Romans built here the city of Pollentia (the powerful). The Vandals destroyed the city in 440 AD and the population fled to the mountains. They founded the city of Pollença, which they named after their hometown. The Arabs built on the Roman remains a new city called "Al Kudia" (hill). After the Reconquista of Majorca Alcúdia was fortified under King Jaume II. This city wall still exists today and is the famous attraction of Alcúdia.

Santuari de Lluc

The "Santuari de Lluc" is located in the Sierra de Tramuntana. The "Santuari de Lluc" is a special place that was settled already in the Bronze Age. The Arabs also took advantage of the place and resisted here the Reconquista until 1232. The special thing about the "Santuari de Lluc" is that it is situated on a fertile plateau that can be well defended. The miracle of Lluc made the place a place of pilgrimage. An Arab boy named Lluc who had converted to Christianity with his parents found a black Madonna in the bushes. He took the statue to the nearest church. There, however, the statue disappeared on the same day. Lluc found the black Madonna in the same place again. Then the priest decided to build a church for the black Madonna "La Moreneta" at the place it was found. The first church was built around 1268. The present Renaissance church of Santa Maria de Lluc was completed in 1691. The image of the Virgin of Lluc "La Moreneta" is a destination for devout pilgrims. Interesting stone formation also gives the place a mystical aura. Wortha visit is also the Botanical Garden which was created in 1952 and is home to endemic plants of the Balearic Islands. In the building complex there is also an interesting museum with archaeological finds and various collections on different topics. Lluc is about 38 km from Palma de Mallorca heading north.

Sineu

The small town of Sineu with its approximately 5,000 inhabitants looks a bit sleepy but on Wednesday the medieval city wakes up. Then the weekly market takes place. The market is the most beautiful of the whole island, there is still a livestock market and other kind of food is sold. The market of Sineu is still original even if the town in the middle of the island has already been discovered by some tour operators. Sineu is a rewarding stopover on an island tour. Distance to Palma is about 32 km.

Cala Figuera

The rugged east coast of Majorca impresses with clear blue water with many small bays. In the places where there is a sandy beach, holiday villages have mushroomed. Cala Figuera has no sandy beach so the small town is still relatively tranquil. Cala D'or has several bays with beaches and is therefore more touristy. Generally, there are only a few huge hotel complexes in the south of the east coast. The guest houses are mostly in small villas, which are dominated by the trees of their gardens.

Torre de Cala Pi

The inhabitants of the Balearic Islands were often attacked by Arab pirates, murdered or sold as slaves in Africa. For this reason watchtowers were built on the coastline, to spot foreign ships. Some of these watchtowers are still preserved. The "Torre de Cala Pi" is one of them. The "Torre de Cala Pi" stands on a small peninsula on the Playa Cala Pi. Cala Pi is a small village with a few restaurants. The distance to Palma is about 35 km.

Cuevas del Drach

The Dragon Cave "Cuevas del Drach" is one of the top attractions on Majorca. The cave system was previously used as a refuge during pirate raids. Bizarre stalactites and the underground lake attract many visitors every year. The approximately 180 m long hall with a 40 m wide lake is staged by light and classical music. Boats manned by musicians emerge from the darkness of the cave, turning the cave into a concert hall. The tourists can also cross the lake in barges before going back to light. The "Cuevas del Drach" is located on the outskirts of Porto Cristo
